January 24 and 31, 2014 - Corpus Christi Catholic School Colt Express

Catholic Schools Week is NEXT WEEK!
January 26-January 31

Our annual Catholic Schools Week (PLEASE SEE SCHEDULE BELOW) and our 2014-2015 Current Family Registration is QUICKLY approaching so you can mark your calendars!  So why Catholic Schools? Check out the following link to the National Catholic Education Association: NCEA Celebrates Catholic Schools Week

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS REMAIN STRONG IN FAITH, KNOWLEDGE AND SERVICE
“”Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service,”” is the theme chosen for Catholic Schools Week, 2014. The heart of a Catholic education is a strong Catholic school community, and the foundation for that community is our faith.

Catholic education is an expression of the mission entrusted by Jesus to the Church He founded. Through education, the Church seeks to prepare its youth to proclaim the Good News and to translate this proclamation into action. We believe very strongly that we have a mission and that it is to build up members of the Church by nurturing the mind, body and spirit of young people today.

Our children are why Catholic schools exist, but it is the dedicated teaching staff that constitutes the heart of the school. For Catholic educators, every year is a “year of faith,” for every year is an opportunity to provide a vibrant faith-filled academic program, as well as a commitment to service. While noted as schools of academic excellence, the special character and reason for the existence of the Catholic school is the quality of the religious instruction integrated into the overall education of the students (“Catechesi Trendendae,” 69). Our faith is the sturdy framework around which everything else is integrated: a challenging curriculum rooted in Gospel values and Catholic teachings, the sacraments, liturgy, prayer, religious instruction and service experiences. If it is truly effective, the religious education and faith formation touches all members of the school community — students, parents, teachers, administrators and staff — forming them in the way of holiness…

Teachers in Catholic schools are in a privileged position. It is they who have the opportunity to model the faith, and guide both students and parents, instilling in them a sense of the Gospel challenge to acknowledge God’s central place in their lives. With their enthusiastic devotion to the mission of the Catholic school, teachers do whatever is necessary to help children grow and develop their gifts, and to form disciples — students who know, love and serve Christ, in this world and the next…

Help Your Child Succeed in School: Build the Habit of good attendance early.
School success goes hand in hand With good attendance!

“DID YOU KNOW?
·    Stating in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
·    Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
·    Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
·    Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school – and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help children do well in high, college, and at work.”

For more information regarding good attendance, please visit: http://www.attendanceworks.org/

Our students develop their God-given gifts each day in Catholic schools. God is counting on parents and teachers to help in that effort.

TUITION FACTS
Based on the Annual Statistical Report 2012-2013, National Catholic Educational Association, 2013

·    Based on the average public school cost of $10,652 per student, Catholic schools provide nearly 21 billion dollars a year savings for U.S. Taxpayers.
·    Tuition fees paid by families constitutes a portion of the actual per pupil expenses.
·    The average per pupil tuition in parish elementary schools (in the United States) is approximately 62.2% of actual costs per pupil.
·    About 93.9% of elementary schools provide some form of tuition assistance.
·    The secondary school mean freshman tuition is $9,622, which is about 81.6% of actual costs per pupil of $11, 790.
·    About 97% of secondary schools provide some form of tuition assistance.
·    The difference between the per pupil cost and the tuition charged is obtained in many ways, primarily through direct subsidy from parish, diocesan or religious congregation resources and from multi-faceted development programs and funding activities.

Celebrating Sunday- February 2, 2014
Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

There was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, who was a devout and righteous man, awaiting the consolation of Israel.  The Holy Spirit was upon him and it had been revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen Christ the Lord. He had longed to see the Messiah and recognizes that Jesus is the light, not just for Israel but for the entire world! Simeon's goal of life was fulfilled in this Presentation of the Lord!  February 2nd is also known as Candlemass - 40 days after Christmas and mid-way between the Winter Solstice and Spring equinox.

On the Way to Mass..Ask your children to listen and count how many times they hear the word light? Why?

On the Way Home from Mass...Are there any elderly people in your lives?  How can your children honor their wisdom?

Living the Word
In honor of Simeon and Anna, who was also a prophetess in the temple who also was praying for the coming of the Savior, spend some time with an elderly person in your life or visit a local nursing center.  If your older relatives do not live close enough to visit, write them a letter or call them and let them know how special they are to you! In what way are the elderly a light for us?

AdvancEd School Survey and YOUR Participation
Every five years, it is an honor to welcome an AdvancEd (formally known as NCA) evaluation team to CCCS to determine our level of accreditation   Your teachers, staff, the Home and School Association Board and the School Advisory Council are well on the way in preparing for this team to arrive here on March 17 and 18, 2014.

We need your input as stakeholders in our school!  If you have not done so already, please access our school parent survey at AdvancEd Parent Survey and complete our survey. Your input is greatly needed and will be used in determining the next steps we take as a school!  Thank you!

Also, if you are interested in serving on March 17 or 18 as a parent the team will interview, please let Mrs. Schindler know at kschindler@corpuschristicos.org.  Thank you!

Middle School Teachers Available to Assist Students

Middle School teachers are dedicated to providing additional assistance to middle school students each day from 2:45-3:15 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Students just need to get a hall pass from the  designated teacher during class and let parents know they will be staying after school for the day!

Corpus Christi Scouts and American Heritage Girls
Welcome to Cub Scout Pack 21 and the family of Scouting

Since 1910, it has been the mission of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to serve others by helping to instill values in young people, to prepare them to make ethical choices over their lifetime and achieve their full potential, and to promote outdoor activities.

Pack 21 undertook this mission when it received its first charter in 1946 under Corpus Christi Catholic Church.  Pack 21 prides itself in providing a quality program based on the principles of Cub Scouting. The Cub Scout Promise, the Law of the Pack, and the Motto are ideals that are related to everything a Cub Scout does. These ideals are not tests to be passed in order to qualify for induction; they are principles that boys learn and incorporate into their everyday lives.  Scouting gives boys the opportunity to develop their character, train in citizenship, and maintain personal fitness.  Simply put - Scouting is fun with a purpose!

Pack 21 currently meets the third Thursday of every month during the school year, and den meetings vary based on the leaders. Cub Scouts offers opportunities for boys in 1st  through 5th grade. Boys can join through out the year so don’t wait until next year!
For additional information please visit www.pack21cos.org or contact   the Cub Master at votavala@aol.com

We are so proud of our Parish sponsored Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and American Heritage Girls and want to better promote participation in these groups! We therefore are beginning a new opportunity of all boys and girls who belong to any of these Corpus Christi Catholic Parish groups!

They get to wear their uniforms INSTEAD of their regular uniforms if:
-  Their Meeting is immediately after school
-  It is NOT a Mass day of Holy Day

If your child is interested in joining one of these groups, please contact the parish office for more information!

New ATTENDANCE PHONE LINE at CCCS
Now available is our new CCCS attendance line.  By calling 719-632-5092 and pressing extension #106, you will be able to leave a message concerning absences, tardies and another attendance related message.  We are excited to have this new line so we can better be able to serve our community by knowing quickly when students are absent or tardy. As a reminder, when calling into this new line - we ask that you call your child in each day they are absent or tardy.
Allergy Alert
As most of you know, we work under delegation of a registered school nurse here at Corpus Christi.  At our last monthly visit, our nurse has given us direction related to any students who have allergies to such things as peanuts, bee stings, etc. Many students, with these type allergies, already have medications such as epipens and the required medical paperwork here at school in case of such an emergency but we have a few that do not.  A private list of these students is available at all times in our school office and the cafeteria and it is noted whether or not we have meds available.  Teachers are also informed on how they need to handle each situation if needed.

PLEASE NOTE:  From this point forward - if a student has an allergy and we do not have emergency response medication or paperwork at our school office - 911 will be called immediately and then parents will be called, per our delegating nurses' direction. If your child does have an allergy and you would like emergency response medications to be kept here at school, please contact Dawn Ambuul or Nichole Munoz to acquire information on how to make this happen.

Dave Ramsey's Financial PEACE at Corpus Christi
We have just set the dates for our next FPU classes here at Corpus Christi.  This will be our 9th class in the past 3 1/2 years!  Over 120 families have completed the series so far! Here are the details for the next sessions:

Financial Peace University (FPU)
It is a nine week series that runs from 1/24/2014 - 3/21/14.  It will be on Friday nights in the Youth Room (church basement) from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.  Baby sitting will be provided (let me know if your high schooler wants service hours).  Cost is still right around $100 and interested parties can contact me directly to sign up at 593-9503.  FPU "gives you the same financial advice that your grandma would" and helps you to "act your wage".

Generation Change
Many parents have been asking us how they can get money and budgeting information to their high school kids.  Well, this Winter we are conducting a new program called "Generation Change".  It is basically FPU for our teenagers.  It presents one way for kids to look at their relationship with money from a biblical point of view.  It will be a lot of fun!

Classes will be every other Sunday night from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. starting on1/12/2014 (through May 11th). There are a total of 9 classes which covers three separate series; BE, DO and GO.  Total cost of the nine weeks is only $30.

Budget Counseling:
One other activity we are doing through the Budget Ministry is One-on-One budget counseling.  Whether you want to work towards tithing as a goal or you want an overall review of some of your budgeting categories we will sit down with you at your kitchen table and talk things over with you.  It is part of the ministry so there is no cost to you.

Please contact John Krause directly at 593-9503 or johnbkrause@aol.com to sign up for the classes or to schedule a counseling session.

SMHS FREE TUTORING
SMHS National Honor Society began their 2013-2014 peer-tutoring at St. Mary's (3:30-4:30) on Wednesday, January 8th. They will be offering this free opportunity every Wednesday for students K-8th grades. SMHS is more than willing to help with bus transportation Please contact Mrs. Robyn Cross for more information or to arrange transportation to St. Mary's at rcross@smhscs.org

SCRIP Letter Coming Home This Friday!
As a reminder, in January 2013, we began a diocesan mandated requirement that each family participate in our school SCRIP program or pay a flat fee instead of participating.  As we put this incremental plan in place the first year requirement was that every family bring in a profit of $75 in SCRIP percentage credit or pay the $75.

Here's How it Works:
As an example, we get an average of 5% back on SCRIP cards. This means that for every $100 purchased in SCRIP cards, the school receives $5.  By just purchasing $1500 over this last year in SCRIP that earns 5%, families have been able to meet the $75 requirement.  The balance will be due on or before completion of re-registration for 2014-2015.

As stated, this is a three year incremental implementation for our school with the final 2015 year profit expectation capping at $275.  In this final year of implementation, once this $275 has been met, all "extra" profit will come back to families in the form of TRIP (a Tuition Reimbursement Incentive Program) which will be credited to their tuition accounts. Many families in other schools use SCRIP to pay most of their tuition just by buying gift cards to make their regular family purchases!!

Beginning this month through December, 2014, the expectation is that each family will purchase enough SCRIP to bring in a profit of $175. So using the 5% idea again, that would mean purchasing $3500 in 5% Scrip cards.  As always, if you do not wish to participate, a flat payment of the $175 (or $75 for this year) is always acceptable *.

* Scrip requirements for new families to our school are based on the number of months of attendance and they are not responsible for the total amounts.

KOAM - EXPAND YOUR FAMILY - EXPAND THE FUN!
Inline image 1Picture yourself introducing your exchange son or daughter to the American culture by going to the grocery, window-shopping at the mall, taking in a  baseball and/or football game, attending a concert, visiting a museum, or barbecuing in your own backyard.  Not only are you able to expand your family, but also expand the fun!  Whatever your favorite activities consist of, sharing them with an exchange student will make lasting memories for you and your new family member.

For your children, their new brother or sister may be their first exposure to another language, different customs, and new ways of thinking.  These early experiences teach tolerance and may spark a lasting interest in world cultures, history, geography, and language.  KoAm students arrive with round-trip airline tickets, complete medical insurance, tuition, school fees and personal spending money for the duration of their stay.  The exchange students show appreciation to the host family with a monetary gift.
We have students ready to come in January and February.  Please apply to become a KoAm host family by contacting Area Coordinator, Choungin Gilbert at 719-637-3584/719-201-7685 or National Coordinator, Haewon Park at 800-521-6640 and 720-339-7710 or by email at administrator@koameduall.org.  To apply online, please visit our website at http://www.koameduall.org and click 'Becoming a Host Family'.

We have several students who would like to come in January/February and we would love to place them at your school.  The following article placed in your school newsletter may bring forth new host families!

Safe 2 Tell
Sometimes it is hard for students to report to teachers and parents when there is something going on in their lives that they know is not ok and they don't know what to do about-abuse, suicide, etc.  Corpus Christi Catholic School is now partnering with a wonderful organization formed here in Colorado Springs called Safe 2 Tell. Safe 2 Tell - http://safe2tell.org/ is an organization designed to allow youth to anonymously report events that they may not be willing or able to report to adults in their lives.  These reports are then sent to the school where we can contact local authorities or parents to get students the help they may need.  Please access the website above or call 877-542-7233 for more information.
